Managing Director
Bryan developed a passion for working with mid-market clients early in his career. After spending a year working in a large investment bank, he moved on to a mid-market corporate finance shop. It was here, that he learned that his clients often did not have the expertise in-house to deal with sophisticated finance, capital markets and strategic business issues.
Providing valuable advice to mid-market clients in any industry means first understanding the basics and fundamentals of what drives their business. This can be a challenge as information is not always as readily available and organized as they would like. Hence, Bryan found the need to roll up his sleeves, work hard and ask a lot of questions.
When Bryan decided to focus his career on commercial real estate in Calgary, he joined a mid-market Calgary-based investment and development firm. He was exposed to a lot of very simplistic approaches to analysis, finance and strategic business planning, habits largely learned as a result of how hot the market had been for so long. As a very detailed oriented, analytical person, Bryan was amazed at how widespread this type of approach was in the mid-market commercial real estate sector.
When the market took a downward turn, he immediately saw an opportunity to add value in a market niche that is not well served by sophisticated, independent and trusted advisors. He felt that if he could build a business that merged his commercial real estate experience with his Chartered Financial Analyst expertise, he could make a strong and positive difference to the building owners struggling in a tough economic situation.
After all, where do these companies go for help when they need it? They often feel their broker will be biased, and their accountants and lawyers don’t know commercial real estate and real estate finance well enough. Who will really roll up their sleeves and do the hard work necessary to help?
So Bryan, along with Anita Smidesang created Base10 Capital to provide mid-market owners, developers and investors with an independent source of skill sets they need to deal with today’s challenges and to re-focus their business on the basics and fundamentals that drive the value of their investments.
